Giclée print – what is it?

Giclée printing is the same as inkjet printing, i.e. print made on a printer that sprays ink onto the paper. Giclée is French and means squirt or in English squirt. In some circles, the term is widespread – especially in the United States. To some, Giclée sounds finer than inkjet and it puts a distance from the printers that are in most homes. An inkjet printer at the cheap end usually uses 4 colours; cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). In addition to CMYK, the slightly more expensive photo printers often use light cyan and light magenta, some also have a black for matte and a photo black for glossy paper.

Professional photo inkjets like the HP DesignJet Z3200 I use have 12 color cartridges; red, blue, green, yellow, light cyan, light magenta, magenta, matte black, photo black, gray, light gray and gloss optimizer. This naturally gives a larger color space – it can print more colors, just as it gives finer nuances in the mid-tones. Furthermore, these prints have a lifespan of over 200 years behind glass.
